WhatsApp chatbot fees highlight growing regulatory pressure
-

Meta’s new pricing follows its January 15 ban on third-party AI chatbots using the WhatsApp Business API, a move the company says was necessary to protect system stability. While courts in Brazil recently sided with Meta, regulators in Italy and the European Union continue probing the policy over anticompetitive concerns.
Developers such as OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft have already shut down their WhatsApp bots, redirecting users to other platforms. Meta says WhatsApp was never intended to serve as a distribution platform for AI bots, but the Italian pricing decision could set a precedent if regulators in other regions force similar exemptions.
