Nvidia’s AI Weather Models Aim to Democratize Forecasting Power

Beyond accuracy gains, Nvidia says its Earth-2 models could expand access to advanced weather forecasting. The suite includes Nowcasting for short-term predictions, Global Data Assimilation for real-time global weather snapshots, and Medium Range forecasting built on Nvidia’s new Atlas architecture.

One key advantage is efficiency. Nvidia claims tasks that once consumed half of traditional weather supercomputing resources can now be completed in minutes using GPUs. This could lower barriers for governments, smaller countries and organizations without access to expensive supercomputers.

Nvidia says some tools are already in use by meteorological agencies and energy companies, framing weather forecasting as both a public service and a matter of national security.
