Nvidia Launches Earth-2 AI Models to Boost Weather Forecast Accuracy

Nvidia has unveiled a new suite of AI-powered weather forecasting tools called Earth-2, promising faster and more accurate predictions as extreme weather events grow more frequent. The announcement came as much of the US faced a major winter storm, highlighting the challenges of inconsistent snowfall forecasts.

According to Nvidia, its Earth-2 Medium Range model outperforms Google DeepMind’s GenCast AI system across more than 70 weather variables. GenCast itself had already surpassed traditional models for forecasts up to 15 days ahead. Nvidia introduced the tools at the American Meteorological Society meeting in Houston, emphasizing a shift toward simpler, scalable transformer-based architectures.

The company says the models can deliver high-quality forecasts with far less computing power than traditional physics-based systems.
