Maia 200 Signals Microsoft’s Push Beyond Nvidia GPUs
-

Microsoft’s Maia 200 is part of a broader industry trend toward self-designed AI chips as major tech companies look to reduce reliance on Nvidia GPUs. Google has long used its Tensor Processing Units, while Amazon continues to expand its Trainium accelerator lineup.
Microsoft claims Maia 200 delivers three times the FP4 performance of Amazon’s third-generation Trainium chips and exceeds the FP8 performance of Google’s seventh-generation TPU. The company says the chip is already powering internal AI models, including Copilot.
Microsoft has also opened access to the Maia 200 software development kit for developers, researchers and frontier AI labs, signaling plans for wider adoption.
