California Moves Against xAI Over Deepfake Sexual Content
-

The California attorney general’s office has launched an investigation into xAI after reports that its chatbot, Grok, was being used to generate nonconsensual sexual imagery of women and minors. On Friday, the state escalated the matter by issuing a cease-and-desist letter demanding that xAI immediately halt the creation and distribution of nonconsensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the production of such material is illegal and warned the company to act without delay. The AG’s office also alleged that xAI may be facilitating large-scale abuse, giving the company five days to demonstrate concrete steps to address the issue or face further action.
