OpenAI has officially taken a step many expected: advertising. As questions grow louder about how a company valued at roughly $500 billion plans to generate sustainable revenue, OpenAI announced it will begin testing limited ads for certain ChatGPT users in the United States, starting with its free and Go tiers.The ads will appear at the bottom of conversations and be tied to the topic a user is discussing. OpenAI says users will retain control, including the ability to dismiss ads, see why they are shown, and disable personalization. Higher-priced plans—Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise—will remain ad-free, reinforcing ads as a tradeoff for lower-cost access.
