SEC Chair: U.S. Response to Venezuela’s Bitcoin Holdings Uncertain
-

SEC Chair Paul Atkins acknowledged that it “remains to be seen” what, if any, action the U.S. government might take regarding Venezuela’s reported Bitcoin holdings—widely speculated to be around 600,000 BTC, or roughly $60 billion. Atkins emphasized that decisions about seizing assets would fall outside the SEC’s jurisdiction and into the hands of other parts of the administration.
While allegations about Venezuela’s crypto stash have circulated following political developments involving former President Nicolás Maduro, blockchain analysts have not confirmed the existence or size of such holdings. Atkins’ comments reflect the broader uncertainty around both the actual size of Venezuela’s Bitcoin reserves and how U.S. authorities might approach them.
