A new report from the Cato Institute argues that most debanking cases in the United States stem from government pressure rather than decisions made independently by banks. According to analyst Nicholas Anthony, public narratives often frame debanking as political or religious discrimination, but the evidence points elsewhere.

Anthony explains that debanking generally falls into three categories: ideological, operational, or government-driven. His findings suggest government intervention — direct or indirect — has been the dominant force over time, with officials influencing how banks manage customer relationships behind the scenes.
