India Tightens Crypto Onboarding With Live Selfies and Location Checks
-

Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has issued new guidelines that significantly tighten how users are onboarded onto crypto platforms in India. Under the updated rules, regulated exchanges must verify users using live selfie photographs and real-time geolocation checks, according to The Times of India.
The selfie verification process includes software that tracks eye and head movements to prevent AI-generated deepfakes from bypassing know-your-customer (KYC) requirements. Exchanges must also record IP addresses, geographic location, and timestamps during account creation, marking one of the strictest crypto onboarding frameworks globally.
