Younger Workers and High-Skill Roles Are Driving Growth

Freelancing is being reshaped by demographics and skills. Around 52% of Gen Z and 44% of millennials participate in freelance work, making younger generations the most active contributors to the independent economy. While Gen Z freelancers make up a smaller share overall, millennials now account for nearly 45% of all freelancers, signaling long-term momentum.
High-earning niches such as programming, development, data analysis, and AI engineering are attracting more professionals, with U.S. freelancers earning an average of $47.71 per hour. Despite restrictive laws in some countries limiting independent work, the global freelance market continues to grow at double-digit rates, reinforcing freelancing as a durable and expanding pillar of the global economy.
