Regulators Push Back as Safeguard Questions Mount
-

Global regulators have reacted sharply, but with limited immediate leverage. The strongest move so far came from the European Commission, which ordered xAI to preserve all documentation related to Grok — a common precursor to a formal investigation. The move gained added weight after reports suggested Elon Musk may have personally opposed restrictions on Grok’s image generation.
X has not confirmed whether technical safeguards have been added, though it removed Grok’s public media tab and reiterated bans on illegal content, including child sexual imagery. Still, critics argue that enforcement after the fact does little to address the core issue: releasing powerful generative models without effective prevention mechanisms in place.
