The EU Council is set to vote on the controversial “Chat Control” law, which would effectively end encrypted messaging across Europe by requiring apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal to scan messages before encryption.

✅ 15 EU member states back the bill, but they lack the 65% population majority needed.
✅ Germany’s 83M citizens could tip the balance — making its stance decisive.
✅ Critics warn it would expose millions of innocent users to surveillance and security risks.

Civil society, academics, and digital rights advocates are mobilizing against the proposal, warning that weakening encryption could open doors for hackers, rival states, and even terrorists.

👉 If Berlin sides with supporters, Europe could face a historic shift in digital privacy.

This feels like the biggest privacy threat in EU history. Once encryption is weakened, there’s no going back. Hackers, rival states, even scammers will exploit it.

Germany holds all the cards here. If Berlin votes yes, Europe could basically say goodbye to secure messaging forever. That’s terrifying.

I get the child protection angle, but forcing mass surveillance on millions of innocent users is the wrong trade-off. Safety shouldn’t mean killing privacy.

As long you don't need KYC the bad guys could just make user in other persons name. Or use hacked account.
So yes you just expose the wrong people.
