Tariff Tsunami: Trump Drops 30% Hammer on EU & Mexico – Starting August 1!
-
Buckle up, global traders — Trump’s back with the tariffs and he’s not pulling any punches. On Truth Social, he just publicly dropped letters to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, announcing:🧾 30% tariffs on goods from the EU and Mexico, effective August 1, 2025. 🪞 “If you hit us back, we’ll mirror your move,” Trump warned.
Key Trump Highlights:
For the EU:
Says even 30% isn’t enough to fix the U.S. trade deficit U.S.-made goods are exempt, of course 🇺🇸 Uncle Sam is “ready to fast-track permits” to bring factories home
For Mexico:
A little praise for helping with the border... ...but a lot of shade for not stopping drug trafficking
EU Reaction:
Von der Leyen said they’re willing to keep talking — but not at the cost of EU interests.Mexico's Response:
Officials called the tariffs “unfair.”In 2024:
EU exported $605B worth of goods to the U.S. Mexico sent $505B — that's a LOT of avocados and auto parts
🧨 This isn't out of the blue:
In Feb 2025, Trump slapped tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China April? Boom — duties on imports from 185 countries (!!!) Deadline for friendly deals was July 9, now pushed to Aug 1 As of July 7, 14 countries were notified of incoming 25–40% tariffs
U.S. Treasury says the goal is to:
Boost U.S. manufacturing Fill up the budget Strengthen America’s position in global negotiations
But analysts warn this might spark a new wave of economic chaos

It’s hard to see how this doesn’t escalate into another messy trade war. These blanket tariffs might help U.S. manufacturing short term, but the ripple effects on supply chains, prices, and diplomatic relationships could be brutal. Definitely feels like 2018 all over again.
