Proof-of-Work vs Proof-of-Stake — It’s Not That Simple
-

Bitcoin’s proof-of-work model is often contrasted with proof-of-stake systems like Ethereum, which are assumed to be greener due to lower energy use. Batten says this comparison confuses energy consumption with environmental harm. Proof-of-work enables methane mitigation, grid stabilization, renewable expansion, and monetization of stranded energy — benefits PoS systems cannot provide.
He also challenges the idea that Bitcoin “wastes” renewable energy. Studies by Moghimi et al. and Lai & You show mining can reduce renewable curtailment by over 90% and improve microgrid economics, particularly in underserved regions. As Batten puts it, energy can only be called “wasted” if it produces no benefit — and the data increasingly suggests Bitcoin mining does the opposite.

not saying mining is perfect, but the discussion around it is way less nuanced than it should be
