“Wrench Attacks” on Crypto Holders Are Getting More Violent
-

Physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders—often referred to as “wrench attacks”—are rising in both frequency and severity, according to new analysis shared by Haseeb Qureshi. Drawing from a dataset maintained by Bitcoin security advocate Jameson Lopp, the research shows a steady increase in reported incidents over time.
More concerning is the escalation in violence. When attacks were categorized across five severity levels, the data showed that recent incidents skew toward more serious harm, including life-threatening and fatal outcomes. The findings suggest that physical security is becoming an increasingly important consideration for high-profile or high-value crypto holders.
