Ilya Lichtenstein, the hacker behind one of the largest Bitcoin thefts in history, has been released from prison just over a year into a five-year sentence. His early release was made possible under the First Step Act, a US criminal justice reform law signed during the first term of Donald Trump.

Lichtenstein confirmed the news in a post on X, saying he plans to make a “positive impact in cybersecurity.” He was sentenced in November 2024 after pleading guilty to laundering funds connected to the 2016 hack of Bitfinex, where nearly 120,000 Bitcoin were stolen.
