Bitcoin Is Only One Piece of Tether’s Reserve Strategy
-

Bitcoin isn’t Tether’s only hedge. In 2025, the company also acquired 26 tons of gold in a single quarter, bringing its total bullion holdings to 116 tons — more than many central banks. Combined with large holdings of US Treasurys, Tether’s reserve mix now spans traditional and digital stores of value.
That diversification has drawn criticism. Ratings agencies and analysts have raised concerns about transparency and concentration risk, arguing that Bitcoin and gold introduce volatility into what is meant to be a stability-focused reserve. Still, Tether’s leadership maintains that these assets strengthen long-term resilience rather than weaken it.
