A Fresh Start After a Long and Turbulent Development
-

The arrival of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in December 2025 marked the end of one of Nintendo’s longest development journeys. First announced in 2017, the project was originally led by Bandai Namco Studios before being fully restarted under Retro Studios, the team behind the original Prime trilogy.
That restart resulted in sweeping changes. Beyond introduces open-world elements, a massive desert hub on the planet Viewros, and psychic abilities that significantly alter Samus’s gameplay toolkit. Nintendo has framed the game as a clean entry point for new players, signaling a deliberate effort to evolve the Prime formula rather than simply replicate it.
