Contrary to popular belief, most senior freelancers are not pushed into self-employment. The report shows that 63% actively chose freelancing for autonomy, meaningful work, and alignment with personal values. Only a small minority turned to freelancing out of necessity, dismantling the idea that it’s a last resort for older workers.

With rising pension ages and widespread under-saving for retirement, freelancing offers flexibility and control. More than half of senior freelancers plan to continue working even after formal retirement, redefining what later-career work looks like in the UK.
