Vitalik Buterin Warns EU Chat Control Threatens Privacy
-

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticized the EU’s proposed “Chat Control” legislation, which would require tech platforms to scan private messages for illegal content.
In a post on X, Buterin wrote: “You cannot make society secure by making people insecure,” arguing that backdoors built for law enforcement are “inevitably hackable” and threaten everyone’s safety. He emphasized that citizens “deserve privacy and security… for our private communications.”
Buterin’s remarks follow concerns raised by entrepreneur Pieter Levels, who urged Europeans to oppose the regulation over fears officials could access personal messages.
