AUDM Stablecoin First to Benefit From ASIC’s Exemption
-

Currently, the licensing relief applies only to Catena Digital Pty, issuer of the AUDM stablecoin.
That means intermediaries dealing with AUDM can now operate without applying for their own AFS or clearing licenses, reducing compliance burdens and speeding up adoption.
However, ASIC hinted that the exemption may be extended to other stablecoin issuers once they secure AFS licenses. This opens the door for more regulated stablecoins to enter Australia’s market under lighter-touch rules for intermediaries.
Industry participants had previously flagged the costs of licensing as a major barrier, particularly in the early stages of crypto regulation. By offering transitional relief, ASIC is signaling its intent to balance consumer protection with innovation.
