The resurfacing of Jeremy Sturdivant’s Bitcoin Pizza Day story highlights a philosophical split that still exists inside the Bitcoin community today.

Sturdivant believed Bitcoin was designed to function as usable currency. He spent the 10,000 BTC he received because, at the time, that was the entire point of the technology — peer-to-peer digital money.

But figures like Blockstream CEO Adam Back represent a very different vision:
Bitcoin as a long-term hard monetary asset designed for accumulation and wealth preservation.

That divide remains central to Bitcoin culture:
    • Spend BTC as money
    • Or hold BTC as digital gold

What makes the Pizza Day story so powerful is that both sides can still claim the transaction proved Bitcoin worked exactly as intended.

That's the question every Bitcoiner eventually faces.

Early adoption required people to actually spend it.

                              Utility and scarcity can coexist.
