Xbox Mode is now rolling out on Windows 11 bringing a full console-like experience to PCs and handhelds
-

Microsoft has begun rolling out Xbox Mode to Windows 11 PCs, laptops, and handheld devices as of April 30, bringing a full-screen controller-optimized interface to desktop gaming that mirrors the console experience without requiring separate hardware. The feature presents games and Xbox Game Pass titles through a single-window full-screen UI that eliminates background distractions, and users can switch back and forth between Xbox Mode and the standard Windows 11 desktop at any time. On supported handheld devices including the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, Xbox Mode can be set to launch automatically on startup, effectively turning those devices into dedicated gaming consoles running Windows. The rollout is happening in waves across different regions, so not all users will receive it simultaneously, but Microsoft has advised Windows 11 users to enable the setting to receive the latest updates as soon as they are available to get Xbox Mode as quickly as possible.
For users who receive the update, Xbox Mode can be activated through Settings under the Gaming section, and entered via Game Bar Settings or the Windows Key plus F11 shortcut. Task View provides another access path through Windows Key plus Tab. Keeping graphics drivers current through Nvidia App, AMD Adrenalin, or Intel's driver software is also recommended to minimize compatibility issues. The Xbox Mode launch arrives alongside a significant Xbox Game Pass pricing change that reduced Ultimate and PC Game Pass to $23.99 and $13.99 per month respectively, though future Call of Duty releases will no longer be available as day one Game Pass titles and will instead arrive on the service one year after launch. Microsoft acknowledged it has work to do following a Q3 2026 earnings slump, and the combination of lower Game Pass pricing and a more accessible PC gaming interface represents the company's clearest signal yet that it is treating the Windows platform as a first-class gaming destination rather than a secondary option to its console hardware.
