    A new survey from market research firm Circana shows that exclusive games remain the top reason US consumers choose a gaming console, with 41% of respondents citing big-budget exclusives as the deciding factor in their purchase decision. However, the same data reveals an 8% decline in this figure compared to last year, signaling a gradual but measurable shift in how consumers evaluate consoles. The loosening of exclusive IP strategies by both PlayStation and Xbox over the past year is a likely contributing factor, with games like Forza Horizon arriving on PS5 and Helldivers 2 launching on Xbox Series X/S reducing the hard boundaries that once made platform choice feel more consequential. As exclusives become less exclusive, other factors like price, performance, and social networks are capturing a larger share of purchasing decisions.The second most cited reason for console choice, selected by 38% of respondents, is what friends and family already own.

    The proximity of that figure to the exclusives number makes it a genuine tiebreaker in the console war rather than a distant secondary consideration. Social and multiplayer compatibility carries real practical weight for consumers who want to share games on the same platform and avoid cross-platform support limitations in online multiplayer titles. For console makers, the implication is that network effects and community size are nearly as powerful a retention and acquisition tool as exclusive software, and that strategies focused entirely on securing exclusive titles may be underestimating how much the social layer of gaming influences purchasing behavior.

      Your friend group already owns the same console as you being nearly as important as exclusive games means the most powerful marketing tool in the console war is just peer pressure.
