Roblox Tests AI Chat Summaries to Keep Users Informed Without Exposing Restricted Content

Roblox is testing a new AI-powered chat summary feature designed to address one of the more frustrating side effects of its age-based communication system. Earlier this year, Roblox introduced chat brackets that separate users into age groups with limits on cross-group communication, a safety measure that drew significant backlash when users discovered they could no longer see messages from friends in different age brackets and found their existing chat history with those contacts deleted. The new summary feature attempts to soften that experience by showing users a filtered overview of what a conversation is generally about, even when the specific messages are from age brackets they cannot access. If the content being summarized contains inappropriate material, it is filtered out before the summary is generated, meaning users get context without exposure to restricted conversations.
The practical effect is that players in a shared server who span different age groups can still follow the same general topic and participate in parallel conversations within their own brackets, rather than sitting next to a wall of locked messages with no idea what is being discussed. Users who prefer their messages not contribute to summaries visible to others can opt out of the feature entirely. The test is still in limited rollout and may change significantly or be discontinued before any global launch. Roblox is simultaneously testing a separate global chat function that would allow communication across multiple servers, also subject to existing age, language, and content restrictions. Together the two features reflect Roblox's broader strategy of using AI across its platform to balance safety enforcement with user experience, a balance the platform has struggled to get right since introducing the age verification system that sparked the original backlash.
