Crypto Scam Targets Ships Near Strait of Hormuz
-

Fraudsters are exploiting geopolitical tensions by posing as Iranian officials and demanding crypto payments from stranded vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. According to maritime risk firm Marisks, shipowners have received messages requesting “transit fees” in Bitcoin or Tether in exchange for safe passage through the region.
The company has confirmed these messages are fraudulent and not linked to Iranian authorities. The scam takes advantage of the current disruption in one of the world’s most critical energy routes, where uncertainty and restricted access have created an opportunity for bad actors to pressure shipping companies into paying large sums under false pretenses.
