Bitcoin Core dev Jimmy Song says Taproot failed to account for its “social attack surface”, enabling Ordinals and BRC-20 spam to flood the network.“Taproot had significant trolling value… The increase in the social attack surface wasn’t accounted for at all.”
Song also criticized Taproot’s touted features like Schnorr signatures and Script Path Spends, arguing they were too complex compared to traditional multisig.
Taproot, activated in 2021, was expected to boost privacy and efficiency — but Song says poor UX left it “a non-starter.”
