Capital Economics says relations between Washington and New Delhi have deteriorated sharply, with U.S. tariffs on Indian goods now among the highest worldwide. Washington has also criticized India’s continued imports of Russian oil and recently courted Pakistan’s leadership — a move that unsettled New Delhi.

Amid this backdrop, India is easing tensions with China. Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit led to agreements on trade and rare earth supplies, and PM Narendra Modi traveled to China for the first time in seven years.

Analysts caution, however, that India is unlikely to tilt fully toward Beijing, given deep economic and security frictions.
