xAI Restructuring Leaves Only Two Original Co-Founders

The leadership structure at xAI is rapidly changing.

Out of the original 11 co-founders who launched the company with Elon Musk three years ago, only two remain as the AI lab undergoes a major internal overhaul.

This week alone saw the departure of co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang, following concerns that the company’s AI coding tools were falling behind competitors.

Musk says the restructuring is intentional, explaining that xAI “was not built right the first time” and is now being rebuilt from the foundations up as it races to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.

With just two original co-founders left, the company is now betting on a new structure to catch up in the increasingly competitive AI race.
