Anthropic Sues Trump Administration Over AI Ban and “Supply Chain Risk” Label
-

AI company Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the administration of Donald Trump, claiming the government launched an “unlawful campaign of retaliation” after the company refused to give the military unrestricted access to its AI system, Claude. The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, asks the court to reverse the Department of Defense decision that labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk” and ordered federal agencies to stop using its technology.
The company argues that the move was retaliation for maintaining safety restrictions on Claude, including bans on lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance of Americans. According to Anthropic, the government had previously accepted these conditions when using the technology for classified work, making the sudden policy reversal unprecedented and potentially harmful to the broader US AI industry.
