Despite headline job growth, many workers are struggling to find employment in a cooling labor market. Economists say hiring rates are now comparable to levels seen after the Great Recession, leaving more job seekers stuck in long-term unemployment.
One example is former software engineer Jacob Sandy, who has been searching for work for more than two years after leaving his tech job in 2023. He says the rise of automated recruiting systems and AI-driven screening tools has made the job search even more frustrating, with many applications going unanswered.
