Google Expands Canvas in AI Mode to All U.S. Users
-

Google has made its Canvas in AI Mode feature available to all users in the U.S., after initially testing it through Google Labs last year. The tool is designed to help users organize projects, draft documents, and even create custom apps or tools directly within Google Search. Users can now turn class notes, research reports, or ideas into shareable web pages, quizzes, audio summaries, or functional prototypes with the help of AI-generated code and feedback. To access Canvas, users simply select the Canvas option in AI Mode and describe their desired outcome, opening a side panel where information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph can be pulled in. The feature integrates with Gemini, Google’s AI platform, allowing advanced users to leverage Gemini 3’s larger context window for complex projects. Canvas positions Google to compete directly with similar offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, but its advantage lies in the massive reach of Google Search, potentially putting AI-assisted project creation in front of billions of users.
