ChatGPT Uninstalls Surge 295% After OpenAI’s Defense Deal
-

OpenAI saw a sharp backlash after announcing a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, rebranded under the Trump administration as the Department of War. According to Sensor Tower, U.S. uninstallations of ChatGPT jumped 295% day-over-day on Saturday, February 28 — far above the app’s typical 9% daily uninstall rate over the past month.
The reaction also impacted downloads and ratings. U.S. downloads fell 13% on Saturday and another 5% on Sunday, reversing a 14% growth rate seen just before the announcement. One-star reviews surged 775% on Saturday and doubled again Sunday, while five-star reviews dropped by 50%, signaling strong consumer sentiment tied directly to the defense partnership news.
