OpenAI Secures Pentagon Deal After Anthropic Ban
-

OpenAI has reached an agreement with the United States Department of Defense to deploy its AI models on the Pentagon’s classified networks, according to CEO Sam Altman. The announcement came just hours after the White House ordered federal agencies to halt use of rival Anthropic’s technology, escalating competition in the defense AI space.
Earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security,” requiring contractors to certify they are not using its models. President Donald Trump also directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic systems within six months. OpenAI says its agreement includes safety guardrails, such as prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and requirements for human oversight in use-of-force decisions.
