Sarvam Launches Indus Chat App to Take on OpenAI and Google in India
-

Indian AI startup Sarvam has officially launched its Indus chat app for web and mobile, stepping into a market dominated by global giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The move highlights India’s growing importance in the generative AI race, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealing that ChatGPT now has over 100 million weekly active users in the country.
Indus runs on Sarvam’s newly unveiled 105-billion-parameter model, Sarvam 105B, designed specifically for Indian languages and local use cases. Available in beta on iOS, Android, and the web, the app supports both text and voice queries with audio responses. While currently limited to India and operating with restricted compute capacity, the launch signals a serious push to build a homegrown AI platform tailored to one of the world’s largest digital markets.
