South Korean Prosecutors Recover $21M in Returned Bitcoin
-

South Korean authorities say they have recovered more than 320 Bitcoin that vanished from government custody last year after the cryptocurrency was unexpectedly returned to an official wallet this week. According to local reports, the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office confirmed that 320.88 BTC — worth roughly $21.3 million — was sent back to a government-controlled wallet on Tuesday before being transferred to a secure domestic exchange account.
The Bitcoin had originally disappeared in August 2025 during an investigation and was later discovered missing in a routine asset inspection in January. Prosecutors attributed the loss to a phishing attack that exposed access credentials. While officials said they had requested local exchanges freeze the hacker’s wallet, they did not explain why the funds were ultimately returned.
