Ethereum Foundation Sets 2026 Priorities: Faster Transactions and Higher Gas Limits

The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled its 2026 “protocol priorities,” placing transaction speed and scalability at the top of the agenda. A central goal is pushing Ethereum’s gas limit — the maximum computational work allowed per block — “toward and beyond” 100 million. This follows a major increase in 2025, when the community raised the gas limit from 30 million to 60 million for the first time since 2021.

Some community members believe the network could go even further. Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano previously suggested that a 180 million gas limit in 2026 should be considered a baseline rather than a stretch target. If achieved, such increases could significantly boost throughput on Ethereum, supporting growing demand from decentralized applications and Layer-2 ecosystems.
