Getting Laid Off Gave Me Unexpected Freedom
-

When I was told on Zoom that my role had been eliminated, I went into shock. I followed the classic layoff routine: crying to my mom, spiraling a little, and taking a long walk to clear my head. But underneath the panic, I felt something surprising — relief.
As someone who grew up during the Great Recession and graduated into a pandemic, I was conditioned to feel lucky just to have a job. That mindset kept me stuck in a role that no longer aligned with my goals. Getting laid off removed the guilt of leaving. It forced a reset I probably wouldn’t have chosen myself.
For me, that reset meant freelancing. I didn’t have a perfect plan or a six-figure roadmap. I just knew I wanted autonomy and work that felt more aligned. Sometimes what feels like rejection is actually redirection — and being laid off gave me the push I needed to finally bet on myself.
