Claude Gains Ground on ChatGPT After Slow Mobile Start
-

Claude’s recent climb marks a dramatic turnaround from its modest mobile debut in May 2024. When it first launched on iOS, the app struggled to gain traction, peaking at No. 55 on the U.S. App Store and attracting just 157,000 global downloads in its first week. By contrast, ChatGPT had secured nearly half a million installs within its first five days on mobile.
Now, momentum appears to be shifting. While global downloads increased 15% week over week, U.S. growth was particularly strong, signaling that Anthropic’s marketing strategy resonated most with American users. The combination of national advertising exposure and a differentiated “no ads” value proposition may be positioning Claude as a serious contender in the increasingly competitive consumer AI app market.
