Why AI Fails at Complex Tasks (For Now)
-

Dan Hendrycks, one of the researchers, explained why even advanced AI models struggled with the RLI tasks. Many AIs lack long-term memory storage and don’t learn “on the job,” limiting their ability to adapt to complex project requirements. Visual reasoning was another weak point, critical for tasks like 3D modeling or animation. Despite AI’s growing capabilities, these limitations mean that creative and highly skilled human labor is still irreplaceable for now.
However, the study also notes that AI is steadily improving. While the overall automation rate was below 3%, progress is measurable, particularly on complex tasks that require reasoning, planning, and design. Researchers emphasized that monitoring AI’s trajectory provides stakeholders a way to prepare for future impacts on work, signaling that while AI is far from replacing humans today, it could gradually take on more responsibility in simpler or more repetitive projects.
