SafeMoon Scandal Deepens as Two Executives Convicted, One Still at Large
-

The SafeMoon case extends beyond its former CEO. Thomas Smith, the project’s former chief technology officer, pleaded guilty in February 2025 to conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud and is currently awaiting sentencing. Meanwhile, SafeMoon’s creator, Kyle Nagy, remains at large, according to the Department of Justice.
The case highlights the broader fallout from the 2021–2022 crypto boom, when retail participation surged and oversight often lagged behind innovation. As investigations continue, SafeMoon has become another example of how internal misconduct at high-profile crypto firms can lead to criminal convictions and long-term reputational damage for the sector.
