A $73M Crypto Scam Ends With a 20-Year Sentence
-

A global crypto scam just met the full force of U.S. federal law.
Daren Li, a dual national of China and St. Kitts and Nevis, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for orchestrating a “pig butchering” crypto fraud that stole more than $73 million from victims worldwide — many of them Americans.
The scheme relied on spoofed trading platforms, fake websites, and long-term social engineering via dating apps and social media. Victims were groomed professionally or romantically before being persuaded to transfer funds.
Li later cut off his ankle monitor and fled, but prosecutors made it clear: this sentence reflects the severity of the damage, and authorities are working globally to bring him back to serve the full term.
Crypto scams aren’t victimless.
And the penalties are no longer light. -
20 years is wild but honestly fits, $73m isn’t small change and the social engineering angle makes it even worse
