ENS is scrapping its planned L2 after Ethereum’s recent upgrades changed the math.

Originally, Namechain made sense when the roadmap said “L2s are the future.” But Fusaka and other upgrades dramatically reduced gas fees and expanded L1 capacity, making it viable to build directly on Ethereum again.

ENSv2 will still interoperate with L2s, but the core protocol stays on L1—showing how fast assumptions in crypto can flip when base-layer scaling actually delivers.
