OpenAI’s Sora app loses momentum after explosive debut
-

After a breakout launch that briefly topped the US App Store, OpenAI’s AI video app Sora is showing signs of slowing growth. New data from Appfigures indicates that Sora’s app downloads and consumer spending have declined steadily since its October debut, as early hype around the AI-powered video platform fades.
Sora, powered by OpenAI’s Sora 2 video model, surpassed 100,000 installs on its first day and reached 1 million downloads faster than ChatGPT, despite being invite-only at launch. However, downloads fell 32% month-over-month in December and dropped another 45% in January, reaching 1.2 million installs for the month.
Consumer spending has also weakened, suggesting users are engaging less as competition and content restrictions increase.
