Competition and copyright limits weigh on Sora’s growth
-

Sora’s recent slowdown reflects mounting competitive and structural pressures. While the app has generated 9.6 million total downloads and $1.4 million in consumer spending to date, monthly revenue fell from a December peak of $540,000 to $367,000 in January. The app has also slipped out of the Top 100 free apps on the US App Store.
Rival AI platforms from Google, Meta, and others have gained traction, while OpenAI’s tightening of copyright controls has reduced the range of content users can create. Although OpenAI has struck new licensing deals, including a recent partnership with Disney, those agreements have yet to translate into renewed growth.
Whether Sora can regain momentum may depend on balancing creative freedom with legal safeguards in an increasingly crowded AI video market.
