Music publishers sue Anthropic over alleged piracy of 20,000 songs

A group of major music publishers, led by Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group, has filed a new lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing the AI company of illegally downloading more than 20,000 copyrighted songs and related materials.

The publishers claim Anthropic acquired sheet music, lyrics, and musical compositions through piracy to train its AI models, including Claude. They estimate potential damages could exceed $3 billion, making it one of the largest non-class action copyright cases in U.S. history.

The lawsuit follows earlier litigation involving authors and again raises questions about how AI companies source training data — particularly when copyrighted works are involved.
