SFWA Bans AI-Generated Work from Nebula Awards
-

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) has updated its rules to ban works written wholly or partially by generative AI from Nebula Award consideration. The change follows earlier controversy when the association initially allowed partial AI usage with disclosure, sparking backlash from members.
SFWA clarified that any use of large language models (LLMs) in the writing process disqualifies a work. The association apologized for previous wording, stating it caused “distress and distrust” among members. Authors like Jason Sanford have welcomed the change, emphasizing that generative AI lacks true creativity and that clear definitions are needed to avoid unfairly penalizing writers using AI-adjacent tools like research or word-processing software.
