Controversial Magic releases fuel shareholder backlash
-

Hasbro’s handling of several high-profile Magic: the Gathering releases is central to a new shareholder lawsuit targeting the company.
The suit singles out Magic’s 30th Anniversary Edition, a $1,000 commemorative set that drew backlash for reprinting iconic cards like Black Lotus. Shareholders allege the product’s “sellout” was misleading, citing claims from former employees that sales were halted early and unsold inventory was later discarded.
The lawsuit also accuses Hasbro of using Magic as a financial “parachute” to offset underperforming business segments, arguing that crossover sets and limited releases made up a disproportionate share of products in recent years. The legal challenge arrives as Magic prepares a packed 2026 release schedule featuring both in-universe expansions and major franchise crossovers.
