South Korean prosecutors lose seized Bitcoin in suspected phishing attack

South Korea’s Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office has reportedly lost a large amount of Bitcoin seized during a criminal investigation, raising concerns over how authorities safeguard digital assets.
According to local media reports on Jan. 22, the loss was discovered during a routine inspection of seized crypto and is believed to have occurred around mid-2025. Investigators suspect the office may have fallen victim to a phishing attack after officials accessed a scam website.
While prosecutors have not confirmed the amount lost, internal estimates cited by local sources suggest the figure could be as high as 70 billion won, or roughly $48 million. An official said an investigation is underway to trace the assets and determine how the breach occurred.
