Academic Warns NYSE’s Centralized Model May Clash With Tokenization
-

Critics say the New York Stock Exchange’s traditional business model may conflict with the decentralized architecture required for effective tokenization.
Omid Malekan argued that the NYSE operates within a “highly centralized and oligopolistic” structure, and that adopting blockchain technology alone would not change those fundamentals. Writing in Fortune, he said meaningful decentralization would require the exchange to abandon long-standing relationships with many intermediaries.
Malekan compared the NYSE’s move to AT&T’s attempt to dominate the early internet in the late 1990s, noting that leadership in one technological era does not guarantee success in the next.
He concluded that real-world asset tokenization demands new skills, incentives, and business models that may not align with legacy exchange structures.
